With procedural audio, instead of playing recorded sounds, we define mathematical models that represent these sounds. The models can then be used to generate audio signals, based on the values of their parameters, and real-time inputs from a designer, a game engine, an animation curve etc...

Benefits of using procedural audio

  • Ultra-high audio quality: since the sounds are generated from scratch, they have no background noise and the highest dynamic range possible
  • The sounds can be customized to perfectly match your project’s needs, simply by adjusting the model’s parameters (e.g. size or distance of an explosion, amount and type of the debris…)
  • By varying the parameters, sound variations can also be automatically generated (for example to get a slightly different footstep, whoosh, or gunshot each time the sound is played). This is especially useful to fight repetitiveness in video games.
  • A sound can be generated to match the length of a sequence or event (without any loss in audio quality due to time-stretching). This is great for animations and videos.
  • As only the parameters of the models need to be stored - and not the audio data - the memory and disk footprint are orders or magnitude lower than for audio recordings. This is ideal for games, especially on mobile.
  • By controlling the parameters of the model in real-time, a deeper audio interactivity - and sense of immersion - can be achieved (sound recordings can only be post-processed). This is a fundamental advantage for virtual reality applications.
  • Simply adjusting parameters to create a new sound is a huge time and money saver: no need to source new sounds, to record the missing Foley or to edit existing samples for each minor change to your project.
